Airbrush paint
When you buy airbrush paint, consider what kind of effect you want
to create and what sort of job you are doing. Painting a giant mural
will definitely require different paint than a T-shirt or ceramic pot.
This will help you understand what kind of paint you should use. Some
of your choices:
• WATER COLORS – These are great for using with airbrushing.
Available in normal tubes, they can also be bought pre-reduced into
airbrush form. Water colors are best reduced (in most cases) with distilled
water. After they are reduced they become a very transparent kind of
airbrush paint.
• GOUACHE – You may see this paint also advertised as Tempera.
It is also a water-based paint, but is a little more opaque. Because
of the white pigment, it is possible you might find it a little harder
to use in an airbrush than you would find with water colors. Gouache,
like water colors, can be reduced with distilled water.
• ACRYLICS – These come in both opaque and transparent
colors and can usually be thinned with water. Or if there is a reducer
made, this also could be used. One category of Acrylic paints is textile
paints made for use on products like T- shirts, jackets and sweat shirts.
Most require heat setting to be permanent again. Manufacturer’s
instructions will offer suggestions about how to get the best results.
• OIL PAINTS – Oils are not one-dimensional. Oils can be
either opaque or even transparent. It really depends on how much thin
them. One of the problems associated with these paints is that it takes
quite a while for them to dry.
There is definitely more than just one kind of airbrush paint. Understanding
which kind is best for you will be helpful in allowing you to best understand
what to buy.
