Airbrush, Paint, and Equipment

Welcome to AirBrushArtistry.com! We are dedicated to providing our readers will all types of information about artistic airbrushing.  From airbrush paint to equipment and even kits and stencils we have the latest information on it all.  Airbrushing is quickly becoming a popular form of artwork because of its unique appearance and fun application.  AirBrushArtistry.com does not promote any one product or method of use.  Our mission is to simply provide our readers with the best information about products and popular techniques to use.

The first airbrush was made and patented in 1876.  It works by passing compressed air through a vent which reduces the air pressure in the lower chamber of the device.  The low pressure in the bottom of the chamber paired with the high air pressure passing through the upper vent allows paint to be pulled from a separate chamber.  The air then separates the paint into tiny drops that are blown onto a surface such as paper, canvas or even cement.   The amount of paint used can be controlled using a knob on the gun as using different amounts of paint can lead to differences in appearance.  Additionally users are able to adjust the range of the spray and they can center concentrate the paint in one specific area or spread it over a larger area.

There are many different techniques one can use to airbrush artwork.  Freehand techniques allow the artist to simply use the airbrush to manipulate paint.   For freehand styles there is no use of stencils or graphs, the artist simply uses their own hand and personal style.  Double action airbrushing is a freehand style of airbrushing however instead of constantly releasing and spraying paint the artist can spray air free of paint to displace the already sprayed paint.  Airbrush stenciling techniques allow the artist to use an array of different stencils to create their piece of artwork.  Using stencils allows the artist to create perfect lines, shapes and even complete pictures.  Many artists who use the stencil design choose to use smaller stencils to create a large piece of artwork, rather than using one large stencil for their entire piece.

Airbrush equipment includes compressors, brushes, paints, and some kind of surface on which to paint. Compressors are often referred to as the sprayer, as it is the part of the airbrush machine that creates air allowing the paint to be sprayed.  However, it actually also supplies the power to the brush when you are airbrushing. Running a compressor requires a fair amount of energy so you should be sure that you have a secure power source.  Brushes are the actual part of the machine that sprays paint.  There are different spray heads to attach as you work on different projects. What kind of airbrush equipment you use, from brushes to paints and compressors are largely dependent on whether you are painting fishing lures or creating fine art illustrations, etc.

When you buy airbrush paint, consider what kind of effect you want to create and what sort of job you are doing. Painting a giant mural will definitely require different paint than a T-shirt or ceramic pot.  Watercolors are great for using with airbrushing because they are easy to find and simple to use;  all you need to do is distill with a little water.  After they are reduced they become a very transparent kind of airbrush paint. Tempera is another type of water based paint that is great for airbrushing.  However is sprays onto surfaces darker then watercolors.  Acrylic paint is commonly used in airbrush artwork because it comes in both opaque and transparent colors and can usually be thinned with water and used on any surface.  Most require heat setting to be permanent again. Manufacturer’s instructions will offer suggestions about how to get the best results.  Oil paint can be either opaque or even transparent. It really depends on how much artists thin them. One of the problems associated with these paints is that it takes quite a while for them to dry.  There is definitely more than just one kind of airbrush paint. Understanding which kind is best for you will be helpful in allowing you to best understand what to buy.
